Specialty of Sri Lanka’s Coco Peat

Specialty of Sri Lanka’s Coco Peat

The notion among growers that coco peat has high salt content. It’s true for its natural form. Coco peat, as extracted from Coconut husk, are greatly affected by the soil conditions. Coconut is naturally grown abundant along the seashore, generally in soil with high salt content. Coconut is grown across the Sri Lanka, however, connecting three major districts into the center of the country (Gampaha, Puttalam and Kurunegala) known as Coconut Triangle cultivates massive number of coconut trees. Coconut is the third highest plantation in Sri Lanka.

We are located inside of the coconut triangle and source our raw materials only from plantations grown in land completely from in and around coconut triangle. The quality characteristics of our soil help produce the best raw material for growing mediums. The selection of coconut husk and processing methodology contribute greatly to lowering the salt content in our coco peat. The EC level of our non-processed coco peat generally falls between 2 to 3 mS/cm. Then coco peat is washed in fresh water to lower the salt content even further below 0.5 mS/cm.

Other than growing bags, there’s a range of innovations in the Coco peat based or Coconut substrate based growing media used in Greenhouse cultivations. They include coir briquettes, coir blocks, coir disks, Coconut husk chips bags and so on and so forth. The growing popularity of coconut substrate has been evident thanks to the many advantages of coconuts.

  • High water retention
  • Faster growth
  • Deterrence of fungus gnats and certain diseases
  • Root-supporting structure
  • Recyclable for being used in the outside.
  • High air porosity
  • Coir pH value is 6 – 6.7 (close to neutral)

Thanks to Sri Lanka’s massive Coconut crop, there’s an abundance of Coconut husks which keeps feeding the industry. Plus, it’s an eco-friendly growing solution.
